Sad Story

For college this summer I need to read a really sad story called Enrique's Journey by a lady named Sonia Nazario. This book is about immigrants who ride on top of trains so that they can come to America. It is more specifically about children who are coming to America to find their mothers who have left them in order to make money to feed their children. These mothers leave America hoping to make more money to send back to their children in places like Guatemala, Salvador, and Hondoruas. Some of these people try to live off an income of about $1 a day. Many children who live there often will search through the dump to find food and get excited to find a stale piece of bread. That is why the mothers leave. This book specifically follows a boy named Enrique on his journey from Hondoruas to the U.S. Enrique is in search of his mother. Terrible things happen on these trains like people falling off the train, getting mugged by gangsters or bandits, or even getting robbed or shot by corrupt police. Girl's who take this journey are extremely likely to get raped. It is a really sad story and it has made me realize how fortunate I am to live in such a great country and in such great circumstances. It makes me want to get up and go help those poor immigrants in some way.
